Laptops are very small computers designed for being used on the run, or not plugged into a wall. The name "Laptop" came from the idea that the computers are small enough to be used on the top of your lap, and with ease. Instead of a mouse, although they can be plugged in through a USB port in most cases, Laptops use touchpads, which move the pointer with touch usually below the keyboard on the laptop. These pads are also called trackpads. Older models of laptops use a small device called a pointing stick, which you move around to move the pointer around.
The big plus when using Laptops is portability. The battery in the Laptop powers it, and can be charged by plugging the laptop into an outlet with a power cord. This means you can carry the laptop places and not have to worry about power, until the charge runs out. A typical battery charge runs a laptop for a couple hours. Also, you can charge other batteries and replace them in the laptop incase your first battery runs out on you. The actual adapter that connects a laptop to an outlet is called an AC/DC adapter. The battery of a laptop tend to make up most of the weight of the laptop itself, surprisingly.
Here are some typical features of Laptops:
-Fold over screen to prevent damage to the screen and the keyboard
-Full keyboard (some include number pads, normally located on all regular keyboards of desktop computers, located to the right of the keyboard)
-Wireless capabilities, so that you don't have to connect through a wired router or through a wall through a Local Area Connection, or LAN.
-SD Card slot, which reads SD cards and accesses data, as well as puts data on
-A large amount of USB slots
-Built-in Speakers
-LAN cable port
-Micro phone port
-Head phone port
-Installed Processing System, such as Windows, Mac, or Linux
There are also many extra features of Laptops, such as:
-Touch Screen, known as Tablet PC's
-Built in Video Camera/Digital Camera, which can also be used as a webcam
-Computers that are the size of mobile phones, and look like cellular phones as well. The keypads are very similar to those of "texting cell phones" as well
All in all, when choosing whether to get a laptop or a desktop computer. Here are pros and cons of laptops:
Pros:
-Portability
-Size
-Replaceable Battery
Cons:
-Generally slower
-Generally worse graphics
-Sometimes Frustrating to plug into a wall, battery tends to run low at inconvenient times
